The 1911 England and Wales Census data is now available. This has been analyzed and the table of census data has been brought up to date.

In the following table, H=households and I=individuals (for example, in 1911 there were, in total, 42 households and 177 individuals with the name Darnton in the Census.

The numbers in this table are underestimates. For a variety of reasons, households and individuals were missed from the Census returns. Accuracy has improved between 1841 and 1911. However, many households in the early years have been analyzed for source and destination of the households from one census to the next. For example, many 1841 census households and individuals just can't be found in the 1851 returns - those people didn't just disappear!. Of the 13 households in 1841, 9 cannot be traced to the 1851 census. There were at least 31 recorded Darnton births between 1841 and 1850, but only a total of 50 Darntons recorded in the 1851 census for all individuals. Therefore there are big gaps which means many households were missed. This is unlikely to be because of migration and mortality was not that high either! At the moment, there is no reliable way to estimate a factor by which the totals should be increased to allow for error. There is better traceability between census returns for the later years, therefore those totals have improved accuracy.
